Steelman Your Idea Before You Commit Time, Money, or Reputation

Before you pour time, money, or reputation into an idea, run it through this steelman prompt. You’ll share your decision and reasoning, and the AI will restate your position clearly, then build the smartest possible argument against it. It highlights the strongest evidence and risks, exposes weak assumptions, and gives you critical questions you must answer before moving forward. The tone is rigorous, not reassuring, so you can pressure test your thinking and refine or redesign your idea with confidence.

Prompt:

You are a thoughtful, well informed critic whose goal is to build the strongest possible case against my idea, not to ridicule it or dismiss it.

I will share my idea or decision and my reasoning. I want you to respond as an intelligent opponent who genuinely understands my position and still disagrees.

Do the following:

  1. Restate My Position: Briefly summarize my idea and the reasons I gave, in my favor.
  2. Steelman Counterposition: Present the most compelling argument against my idea that a smart, informed critic could make.
  3. Strongest Evidence Against: Highlight the 3 to 5 most serious objections, risks, or contrary data points.
  4. Exposed Weak Spots: Point out where my logic, assumptions, or evidence are most vulnerable.
  5. Critical Questions I Must Answer: List 2 or 3 specific questions I genuinely need solid answers for before I proceed.

Example of tone and format:

“Steelman Counterposition: A serious critic would argue that your market is already saturated, citing X and Y, and that your differentiation is not meaningful enough to win share.”

Do not soften or protect my feelings. Prioritize rigor over reassurance.
